In August 1984 the voters of Nueces County approved the adoption of a County Road Department, or Unit Road System, as allowed by State Statutes. Under this system the county road department, under the direction of a county road engineer, is responsible for the construction and maintenance of county roads and bridges, with the commissioners court as the policy-making body.

The Nueces County road system includes over 700 miles of roads and 80 bridges. There are offices located throughout the county responsible for maintenance.
