NOTICE: A County employee who is promoted or transferred into a new appointing authority must serve a six-month probationary period. An employee who is promoted within his or her present appointing authority is subject to a 30-day evaluation period.

Applicants must provide proof of education and licenses at time of application. Applicants must: 1) pass a drug screening; 2) pass a psychological examination; 3) pass a physical examination; 4) pass a background check. If hired, the employee must also pass-- during the six-month probationary period -- a physical screening which includes two minutes of pushups, two minutes of sit-ups, and a two-mile run according to age- and gender-based Army Physical Standards. ***FEMALES AND MINORITIES ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY***.

Required Test:

General Summary: Provides direct supervision of cadets in the Justice Boot Camp during all program operations. This includes monitoring cadets during academic and therapeutic classes, actively participating in physical fitness programs, and providing leadership and counseling.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be 21 years of age. Minimum qualifications include: 1) high school diploma or General Educational Degree certificate (preferred: a bachelor’s degree in one of these areas: psychology, sociology, education, or criminal justice); plus 2) at least one year of experience in one of these fields: corrections or law enforcement, employment in a residential setting, military experience, teaching, or work with youth in a paid or volunteer capacity. Any combination of education and training will be considered. Exclusion: A person employed as a peace officer is not eligible for employment with JBC, nor is a person who is currently on probation or parole, or who is serving a sentence for a criminal offense.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certification as a Juvenile Detention Officer within six months of employment. Valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Current Defensive Driving certification. Current CPR and First Aid Certification. The department, upon employment, will provide training for these certifications, with the exception of the motor vehicle operator’s license.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of departmental policy, rules and regulations. Working knowledge of Family Code and juvenile justice system. Ability to handle difficult situations among persons of widely divergent backgrounds. Ability to deal effectively with mentally disturbed, hostile and aggressive individuals. Ability to communicate effectively with young people.Knowledge of security procedures and techniques and ability to think and react quickly and carefully. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, various law enforcement officials, attorneys, juveniles and their parents, and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Good physical condition with ability to participate in the physical training of the cadets.Knowledgeable about different inspections, drills, ceremonies and the ability to present a good military bearing. Ability to establish and maintain effective problem solving techniques, positive leadership methods and positive anger resolution techniques.

NOTICE TO APPLICANTS:

A candidate for employment may be required to submit to drug testing prior to a formal offer of employment. If a positive result occurs, the candidate will be disqualified from employment with Nueces County for one year from the date of the test result. Nueces County Personnel and Civil Service Rules require all newly-hired or rehired individuals to serve a six-month probationary period.
