Commissioner Oscar Ortiz

Commissioner Oscar Ortiz took office in November 1994 after a Special Election. Since that initial election he has served 18 years as Commissioner of Precinct 3, having been re-elected to four additional four-year terms. Commissioner Ortiz served to the end of Judge Robert N. Barnes' term and served with Judge Richard M. Borchard, Terry Shamsie and currently, Judge Samuel L. Neal (Loyd Neal).

Commissioner Ortiz' Precinct extends from Rodd Field Road and Ocean Drive to areas west of Staples including the communities of Robstown and Driscoll. He has been a strong voice for the agriculture and youth programs of the County and he played a major role in the development of the Nueces County Regional Fairgrounds Complex.

Major accomplishments of the Commissioners Court during his 18 years of service include:

  • Worked to develop and implement Nueces County General Aviation Master Plan.
  • With City and MPO funded raising of JFK Causeway.
  • Resurfaced 270 miles of County Roads and constructed/repaired 36 Bridges as part of a major infrastructure upgrade.
  • Constructed a new Human Services Building in Robstown for the citizens in the western areas of the County.
  • Upgraded the Juvenile Probation Department offices and constructed a Juvenile Boot Camp Facility.
  • Played an active role in the Consolidation of the City/County Health Department functions under one unified set of policies and procedures.
  • Implemented strong fiscal policies as part of the County's Operating Budget.
  • Made initial and follow up contacts with Dolphin Ventures for Outlet Mall Complex.
  • In conjunction with the Nueces County Hospital District, three Health Clinics have been constructed to serve the public on the Island, on the Westside of Corpus Christi, and in Robstown.

Commissioner Ortiz graduated from Robstown High School and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Corpus Christi State University. He is a former Chairman of the Coastal Bend Council of Governments and he currently serves on the Executive Board of the Coastal Bend Council of Government.
