Every two years the eight State District Judges having jurisdiction in Nueces County appoint a
county auditor. This act establishes one aspect of the checks and balances system.
The office of the County Auditor is neither created by nor under the hierarchical control of the Countys administrative governing body, the Commissioners Court.
Mr. Dale Atchley, along with his staff of twenty employees are an integral part of county government for maintaining the integrity of financial administration.
Forecasts financial data for budgetary formulation purposes. Audits the records and accounts of the various county departments. Administers the county budget as approved by Commissioners Court. Prepares and administers accounting records for all county funds.
As an accountant has a general overview of all bookkeeping and financial records of all County Officials. Is charged with the strict enforcement of the laws that govern county finances.
Both the County Auditor and Commissioners Court are required by law, to approve or reject claims for disbursement of county funds. Simply put, the integrity of county financial administration is entrusted to a dual control system of checks and balances.
